Let us continue with the reflections on Power we have already started on in order to understand masculinities. I believe that associating power with freedom can be a great illusion if, in this association, we refer to Power Over – which depends on hierarchical prominence and the subordination of others to exist.
In a hierarchical system that seeks distinction, the status quo is intrinsically connected to the hierarchy to which it belongs; therefore, power is rather dependent. For me, dependence and freedom do not go together. There are those for whom they can do so. Perhaps because they only see themselves as part of the system. Moreover, perhaps their existence consists of constantly seeking to be part of/be accepted by/remain within the system. For them, it is clear that power means freedom. The system rewards them with privileges, prominence and, in many cases, even the feeling of being above the law.
+ Masculinity and (it’s) Power
But the system also makes demands. It is oppressive by becoming vigilant and obsessed with ensuring that everyone follows both spoken and unspoken rules. It is easy to notice in the similarities, that border on sameness, in physical appearance, in the home design, in the clothes worn, in the places they frequent, in the careers chosen by their children, in the type of vacations enjoyed... There is a reason for so much similarity: the constant confirmation of belonging.
The freedom that lives in our imagination seems to be far from this. Mythical freedom exists as we acquire independence from the structural molds of our society, which are imposed by the dominant group. This has more to do with the Power To, explained in my last text.
In practice, this does not necessarily mean breaking any bond of dependence with the structures. After all, I believe that living in society is the healthiest way to be in the world. But having the autonomy not to submit and to interact wisely is, for me, what I understand by freedom today. What is the way? I trust in the path of self-knowledge and connection with our soul.
